History
Lenawee County was established over 200 years ago in 1836. The first elected Sheriff was Joseph H. Cleveland in 1882. In the picture above, this was the Sheriff's office in1900. It was stated that the actual Sheriff Uniform was not introduced until after WWI. To date, there have been 36 elected to be Sheriff of Lenawee County, with Richard Germond serving the longest term from 1964-2000. Will Carleton was an historical poet who attended Hillsdale College. He was born in Lenawee County in 1845 in what I refer to as gods country in Hudson Michigan. It is there on M-34 near Dowling Hwy that his home is a historical landmark. Throughout Lenawee County, there are locations of Harriet Tubman's famous Underground Railroad where she relocated slaves from the south to Michigan.
